Tips To Keep Your Feet In Good Shape This Winter

You probably don't spend a ton of time thinking about your feet, but they deserve more credit than they get, considering they do help you go basically everywhere. The winter season can present some unique challenges for your feet, especially if you enjoy being active. Here are some tips to keep in mind to keep your feet in good condition until the temperature begins to climb upwards again:

Use the Right Socks (or Two Pairs) If You Will Be Moving Through the Ice and Snow

It's always a good idea to keep your feet dry, but this is especially true during the winter. An excess of moisture could make you feel uncomfortable or even lead to frostbite if your feet actually get soaked. If you are a runner who intends to keep up your fitness schedule during the winter, make sure you have the right socks for the job. At a bare minimum, consider investing in some moisture-wicking socks to prevent sweat from becoming an issue. But if you will be trudging through the snow, get socks that are double layered or literally wear more than one pair of socks at the same time. It's OK if your socks get wet, but you want there to be enough of a barrier to keep your feet as dry as possible.

If you want to take things a step further, you can seek out boots or socks that are branded as waterproof. This will help keep you as dry as possible and leave you far more comfortable over the course of the day if you will be outside in the elements for some time.

Use the Right Shoes for Your Winter Sport

The winter season brings with it opportunities to go snowboarding, ice skating, skiing, and various other outdoor sports. Many of these sports include special footwear designed to create better traction while moving through the snow or across the ice. Never try to do one of these activities while wearing regular shoes. It's also important that you get fitted for your specialty footwear to ensure the best and most comfortable fit possible. Some specialty footwear might require a different size compared to what you wear for normal shoes, so try several pairs on before you buy.

If you intend to be active outdoors this winter, make sure you equip yourself with the right socks and shoes for the activity you are doing. Contact your local podiatrists if any issues come up with your feet this winter
